LUCKY OLD SOULS Presents
ALFIE POLLITT

(Alfie Pollitt, piano)
and O’NEILL/MICELI DUO
(Ben “Bananas” O’Neill, guitar; Tony Miceli, vibraphone – performing music by Ellington & Strayhorn)

Alfie Pollitt

ALFRED POLLITT, known to many in the music world as “Alfie,” has been studying and playing music since the tender age of three. A native of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Alfie was surrounded and inspired by all types of music and was given classical piano instruction from his mother and father, both respected and influential members of the Philadelphia art and music communities. Since his first piece of musical composition in 1958, entitled “15th Street,” Alfie has written well over one hundred songs.

Some of his major influences include John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, and Jimmy Smith. These and other musical greats helped to shape and formulate Alfie’s diverse playing style. Throughout Alfie’s musical career he has had the fortunate opportunity to perform with a broad spectrum of prominent jazz and R&B performers, including Donald Byrd, Archie Shepp, Art Blakey, Norman Connors, Sister Sledge, Billy Paul, Stephanie Mills, George Howard, and the Four Tops, in addition to his own bands and ensembles. He toured extensively with legendary R&B superstar Teddy Pendergrass, which added two platinum-recording credits to Alfie’s impressive list of achievements. Mr. Pollitt has also represented Philadelphia at the Ocho Rios Jazz Festival in Jamaica (1995) and at the Festin Third International Music Festival in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil (1993). Besides being a musician, Alfie is known as a teacher and mentor to many musicians and other people in the surrounding communities.

Additionally, Alfie has extensive experience composing musical works, including theme songs and jingles for events and organizations including the Mataah Network, the Black Music Association, and the Africamericas festival. He was also a collaborator on “Our Family Reunion,” a piece that promotes family reunions, and “Malcolm X,” an epic work that depicts events in Malcolm’s life in song.

Guitarist BEN O’NEILL, known to some as “Bananas,” moved to Philadelphia in 2000 to attend The University of the Arts, where he studied with many excellent musicians and educators including Jimmy Bruno, Tom Giacabetti, and the legendary Pat Martino. He graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Music with Honors. During college he toured and recorded with Columbia Records gospel artist Tye Tribbett and G.A. Upon graduation Ben began a full time career of touring, recording, and teaching. Over the last five years Ben has performed with Christina Aguilera, Common, Musiq Soulchild, Erykah Badu, Will.i.am, Kanye West, Cee-lo Green, and Bilal, among others, and has appeared on many TV shows including The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Ellen Degeneres and 106th & Park. He has also taught many students of all ages, independently, and at Tirpak Music School and Independence Charter School. In 2009 he received a Grammy nomination for a vocal performance with independent R&B star Eric Roberson. He is currently making a full time study of gospel music and performing in support of his third independently released album–The Corduroy Pants EP by The MLMs. Joining Ben for this performance is TONY MICELI, the ubiquitous vibraphonist on the Philadelphia jazz scene and a faculty member at The University of the Arts and Rowan University.

Sunday, January 3, 2pm – Jaybird & Zach Caruso

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

SUNDAY, JANUARY 3, 2pm – MUSIC
JAYBIRD
ZACH CARUSO

The history of Jaybird is one that has created songs around campfires and silenced warm coffee shops. Peter Rosati started playing guitar at the same time that his Brother Jacob started drums. “It came naturally,” Jacob says. “But we never made a band out of our playing; just showed each other what we were writing at the time.” Their music went on this way through years of practicing and writing. The turning point came when Jacob joined Peter’s band to replace the old drummer. They started to write together and little did they know that Jaybird was beginning to take shape. The future of Jaybird is not planned out; there are no set goals. For Peter and Jacob Rosati Jaybird is something they could not do without. “I don’t how far this will take us, but I do know it won’t stop unless we let it. Jake and I have been playing together since I had a guitar; there is too much behind Jaybird, too much of a connection, too much history, too many experiences, for an end to be seen. The words we put together are purposeful. And personal. “I get chills in my toes when we play…it’s beautiful.” Peter Rosati To this day Jaybird continues to be about what it started as: growing, learning, and remembering.

Zach Caruso is a guitarist/singer/songwriter from southern New Jersey. His love of music began at an early age after acts like Green Day and The Black Crowes sparked his interest in the guitar. Completely self-taught, he began singing and writing his own original music by the age of 14. Zach’s musical tastes began to mature, and so did the music he wrote. Acts such as Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Joe Bonamassa re-fueled his love of guitar as well as peaked his interest in older style classic rock/blues music, while performers like Ben Harper and The John Butler Trio opened his eyes to new genres. Many of his songs hearken back to the older days of rock music, while others have a fresh new style, and others still are difficult to classify. One thing is for sure; his wide range of musical influences has given him the tools to try his hand at an assortment of different musical styles. A senior at Rowan University, Zach has continued on with his love of writing as a Journalism major, and has written numerous sports articles for local papers. But his passion still lies with music, and his songwriting continues to grow and develop. At 21, Zach has now hit his stride. His eclectic blend of musical styles and influences sets him apart from his peers, and he refuses to be pigeonholed into any one specific genre.

TomLawtonPiano

TOM LAWTON is a highly respected, gifted, and creative jazz pianist who resides in Montgomery County and teaches and works actively as a freelance musician in the Philadelphia area, New York City, and internationally. He’s had the distinct honor of being the jazz pianist the Philadelphia Orchestra often chooses for its social functions. For about ten years, Tom was the house pianist at the Philadelphia Four Seasons, often with the late great bassist, Al Stauffer. Tom is currently a member of Bobby Zankel’s Warriors of the Wonderful Sound, which has been playing monthly shows at Tritone for ten years. Tonight’s music, commissioned by the American Composers Forum for a Community Partners Grant, is the culmination of Tom’s partnership with the Philadelphia Senior Center at Broad and Lombard Streets. The suite, a prologue and seven movements, is inspired by Tom’s conversations with the seniors who use the center–conversations about their lives in general and their relationships to music, in particular. Joining Tom tonight are two great young musicians–drummer Alex Maio and bassist Josh Machiz. Both are members of the unique jazz/rock/hip-hop band Drake, and Maio also plays with the bands Erronious Krunk and Mi Head Ur Head.

CLASSICAL REVOLUTION: Live chamber music for the people. The Philadelphia chapter of an international movement, the Classical Revolution is a collective of musicians who believe in the relevance of classical music and are bringing it outside of traditional venues. In their own words: “We hope to integrate this music into Philadelphia’s nightlife, giving people who do not otherwise hear it live the opportunity to engage intimately with it and its interpreters. Currently in its inaugural stages, Classical Revolution Philly seeks to create an avenue for music-making which involves passionate professional, emerging, and nonprofessional musicians alike. Our performers include members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Ballet, local professionals, conservatory and non-conservatory students alike. We love chamber music, and we believe that everyone can enjoy the music that we love.”

GinaFerrera

Gina Ferrera & the Philadelphia Gyil Fusion Project
Gina Ferrera’s music is like a luminous burst of energy radiated by the fusion of layers of Philadelphia talent, passion, collective spirit, creativity, folkloric inspiration and urban charisma. The music is a sound journey; a free play interlaced with traditional melodies, polyrhythm and layers of overtones and buzzing sounds. Gina Ferrera, Shawn Hennessey, Gabe Globus-Hoenich and other special guests are “astral pirates of sound”, featuring native African instruments like the gyil (a traditional West African xylophone), global percussion instruments, guitar, effects, drumset and vocals. These players voyage unexplored sonic lands; “Terra Incognita”.

Hypercube

Hypercube
Hypercube is an original modern jazz project that features some of the most exciting young musicians in Philadelphia. Trumpeter Chris Aschman and saxophonist Mike Cemprola form the front line of this quintet, playing intricate melodic lines through colorful and textured musical frameworks. Drummer Matt Scarano adds a strong rhythmic foundation with a style that is sensitive yet emphatic, which is bolstered by the steadfast lines of upright bassist Ryan Kuhns. Between these sonic layers, guitarist Tim Wendel interlaces rich harmonies. Performing all original compositions, they have an unmistakable sound and chemistry.

Doors: 8:30 p.m. Show: 9 p.m.

Lucky Old Souls @ Moonstone is a monthly event, showcasing some of Philadelphia’s most creative musicians in a laid-back, BYOB venue that combines the intimacy of a club with a concert hall’s respect for the music.

Thri (pronounced “three”) is a chordless trio dedicated to the spontaneous renderings of common (and not-so-common) tunes. With a heavy stress on interplay and personal expression, as well as an elusive reference to the great chordless trios of jazz, the group catapults itself toward what its members have called the “string theory” — the belief that there are an infinite number of ways to play through any one tune. Thri is UArts faculty members MICAH JONES (bass) and MIKE PRACHER (sax), with UArts senior ANWAR MARSHALL (drums and cymbals).

Denise Frohman (a.k.a. Ms. Misconception) is a published poet, lyricist, and educator who has been writing and performing for over 6 years. Chosen by Scheme Magazine as one of their “2009 Voices of the Year,” alongside The Floacist (formerly from Floetry), she is most known for combining the worlds of hip-hop and contemporary poetry. Raised by a Puerto Rican mother and Jewish father in New York City, and proudly a part of the LGBT community, Denice Frohman is an emerging voice in the poetry and spoken word movements. A Budweiser 2009 Battle For The Crown Finalist in Philadelphia, she has shared the stage with Sonia Sanchez, performed in front of the likes of Dr. Cornel West, opened up for Universal Recording artist, The Flobots, rhymed with female hip-hop heavyweights La Bruja, Patty Dukes, Lah Tere and Misnomer(S), and performed with The New Yorker’s “Best Latin Jazz band,” The Bronx Horns. Her diverse background creates a distinct voice and a unique platform for her poetry to explore major themes such as identity, heritage, language, women’s rights, equality, hip-hop, and social injustices. As a former Puerto Rican professional basketball player, Denice Frohman also straddles the worlds of both sports and art, inspiring her to challenge and address traditional gender roles, as well as chronicle her experiences as a female athlete.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 30, 9pm – MUSIC – $10 cover,

THE DOUG HAWK PROPOSITION
THE MIKE LORENZ TRIO

The Doug Hawk Proposition is a three-piece ensemble that hails from Easton, PA. Fronted by vocalist, keyboardist and principal composer Doug Hawk, the group presents a unique, cerebral sound, which can be described as at once historically soulful yet progressively hip. Seasoned drummer Rian Carr and Nicholas Krolak, an emerging, young upright bass player make up the rest of the group.
The Mike Lorenz Trio featuring Mike Lorenz, guitarist/composer/bandleader, is an up-and-coming musician centered in the music scene of the Lehigh Valley. He leads the Mike Lorenz Quartet, which features some of the most in-demand musicians in the Philadelphia area. The group merges influences from within the whole scope of the jazz idiom with outside influences of rock, hip-hop and classical music. Mike has led performances in such venues as Smalls Jazz Club in New York City, Chris’ Jazz Cafe, the Tritone and the Sci Fi Philly/Ars Nova Workshop series in Philadelphia, Puck Live in Doylestown and numerous venues in other parts of the Philadelphia region.
“Guitarist Mike Lorenz operates out of the Lehigh Valley and mixes it up regularly in Philly, bringing a focused and fluent vocabulary to music of original construction. Working within the melodically edgy orbit of such role models as Ben Monder and Kurt Rosenwinkel, he can float by on chordal clouds or stun you with quick flashes of linear brilliance, as on a nifty MySpace track called “3 Step.” Lorenz’s quartet comes at the material with a sense of whimsy and seasoned trust. ” David Adler – Philly Weekly

jackwright

JACK WRIGHT is one of a very small group of musicians in North America that has played improvised music exclusively since the 1970s. After teaching at Temple University in the 1960s and leaving academia in the early 1970s to engage in radical politics and community organizing, by the late 1970s Wright was directing his energies into music. Through years of near constant touring, often performing for audiences in cities and towns where improvised music had never before been heard, he came to be regarded as something of an underground legend. He has deliberately eschewed the conventions and socio-aesthetic limitations of musical careerism to pursue his own vision. Although his de-professionalized approach sets him apart from most musicians at his level of accomplishment, his art has always grown, expanded, and synthesized new information. He is unquestionably an original and virtuosic saxophonist, a master improviser who is deeply lyrical, with humor never far away. For more on Wright, visit www.springgardenmusic.com. Wright will be joined tonight by bassist DAMON SMITH www.balancepointacoustics.com/damon.php and drummer MIKE SZEKELY http://www.myspace.com/michaelszekely.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 23, 9pm – MUSIC
DIEGO and HUGO MANUSCHEVICH
THE SASSAFRAS SPINE TRIO

Diego Manuschevich
is a highly regarded multi-reedist/composer working in Santiago, Chile. He has led and composed for numerous ensembles ranging from trios to octets – including “Los Ogros del Swing” and “Diego Manuschevich Quinteto” – comprised of some of the most talented and creative young musicians in the local scene, and performed in all the main jazz (and non-jazz) venues in the city, in addition to performances outside of Santiago. He has also performed and recorded with large ensembles such as the highly regarded “quintessence” and the more classicaly oriented “14 gatos del eclipse”, both of which were awarded government arts grants. Outside of Chile he has performed extensively and recorded with bassist Rolando Alvarado and Drummer Mark Ettingoff as well as NY-based avant-garde guitarist Thomas Reuben and bassist Francois Grillot.

Sassafras Spine Trio is a newly formed band consisting of Max Carmichael, guitarist from Red Bank, NJ; Bassist Rolando Alvarado from Middletown, NJ; and Philadelphia drummer, Mark Ettingoff. The trio’s performances range from free improvisation and original compositions, to their own unique interactions with jazz standards. Max has studied under guitarist Gary Wright, and makes yearly trips to India to study the Chaturangui under his guru, the world famous Debashish Bhattacharya. Rolando has studied with Slovenian composer Jerica Obla and NYC bassist Trevor Dunn, and was an original member of the controversial Los Ogros Del Swing (Santiago, Chile). Mark has studied with NYC drummer Tony Moreno and pianist Connie Crothers, and was also an original member of Los Ogros. All three members are currently active in a variety of musical projects throughout the tri-state area. Together they have developed a sound, which they continue to share with all kinds of audiences.
