Lucky Old Souls @ Moonstone Presents The Mike Lorenz Quartet & TBA

The Mike Lorenz Quartet celebrate the release of their CD “In The Woods”

Mike Lorenz, guitar; Mike Cemprola, alto sax; Brian Howell, bass; Matt Scarano, drums

Mike Lorenz is a guitarist hailing from the Philadelphia region.  Since graduating from Moravian College with a Bachelors of Music in Jazz Performance, he has kept a busy schedule as a performer and instructor.  He leads his own group performing his original jazz compositions.  Since 2007, Mike has led his band in performance at Smalls Jazz Club in New York City, Chris’ Jazz Cafe, Ars Nova Workshop/Sci Fi Philly series, Tritone and the Moonstone Arts Center in Philadelphia as well as numerous venues in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania.  He has performed with Andrew D’angelo, Matt Mitchell, John Swana, Jim Ridl, Lou Lanza, Skip Wilkins and is a member of the Tony Gairo Band, the Gairo/Rissmiller Jazz Orchestra, a jazz collective called the Dirt Party and the Doug Hawk Proposition.

The Mike Lorenz Quartet features alto saxophonist Mike Cemprola, upright bassist Brian Howell and drummer Matt Scarano, some of the most talented and in-demand young musicians on the Philadelphia jazz scene.  Each musician brings their unique talents to a growing book of original compositions by Mike Lorenz that exists between the innovations of modern jazz, the experiments of free jazz and the avant-garde and feeling of post bop and bebop.  Recently, the group has been performing in support of their first release, a self-released full length CD, entitled Of the Woods.

Dan Hanrahan Trio & Dave Sanders Quartet

Firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, guitarist Dan Hanrahan’s playing has been described as “classic, literate, and swinging”. Since graduating from Temple University’s Boyer College of Music in 2009, Dan has been making a living in Philadelphia as a guitarist and educator. Dan has performed at several Philadelphia area venues such as Chris’ Jazz Cafe, Ortlieb’s Jazzhaus, The Deer Head Inn, The Kimmel Center, and has shared the stage with Benny Golson, Dick Oatts, Terell Stafford, George Garzone, and Bruce Barth. Currently, Dan works with several performing bands including the After Hours Trio with vocalist Najwa Parkins, the Tap Room Trio, and the rock/pop band Onufrak. He also leads his own band which performs original music as well as jazz standards. Dan’s intention is to bring his own voice and experiences to the tradition he admires in order to create an honest and personal sound.
