Free with Museum Admission
The inspiring story of brave people compelled to act in the face of injustice, risking their livelihoods, their families, and their lives in the cause of freedom. Philadelphia was an especially important destination with escapees from slavery coming by ship, train and foot. Some of these true stories are recounted in the Tides of Freedom exhibit and others will be told using picture books and storytelling. Lorene Cary will read from her book Free! Great Escapes from Slavery on the Underground Railroad. You will hear about Henry Box Brown, Jane Johnson, Harriet Jacobs, Harriet Tubman and others. Ages five to adult. This will be a one hour program presented at 11am and repeated at 12noon.
