JARRETT GILGORE PROJECT & SWANA, HANSON, JOHNSON, & HUFF

JARRETT GILGORE PROJECT: Jarrett Gilgore, alto & tenor saxophones; Jeff Baumeister, piano; Noah Jarrett, upight bass; Kevin Ripley, drums – JARRETT GILGORE was born in Philadelphia in 1992 and grew up in Bucks County. He started playing alto saxophone when he was nine and quickly took off musically under the guidance of Thomas Razler. While in high school, Jarrett was a member of the Clef Club Senior Youth Ensemble, directed by Lovett Hines, Louis Taylor, and Vernon Lewis and also studied privately with Ben Schachter.  Jarrett started performing in Philadelphia in 2008, first at the SciFi Philly series with his trio, Untitled Original, and subsequently at The Kimmel Center, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Chris’ Jazz Cafe. By the time Jarrett was entering his senior year of high school, he’d recorded an album with The Dirt Party, a jazz collective led by drummer Carl Bahner. In August 2010 The Dirt Party performed with Andrew D’Angelo at Tutuma Social Club in Manhattan. Andrew later asked Jarrett to write a graphic score for his ensemble, which will be premiered later this year at Douglass St. Music Collective.  In September, Jarrett will attend Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, where he will study privately with Gary Thomas.

SWANA, HANSON, JOHNSON, & HUFF: John Swana, electric valve instrument (EVI); Kevin Hanson, guitar; Chico Huff, electric bass; Erik Johnson, drums – Electric bassist CHICO HUFF is a familiar face around Philadelphia, playing frequently in the bands of Jef Lee Johnson, Dave Posmontier, Jeannie Brooks, and others.  He has also played with a wide variety of other musicians including Pat Martino, Jefferson Airplane, and Terrence Blanchard.  Tonight’s show provides a rare opportunity to hear Chico leading his own project.  He will be presenting a mix of original compositions and collective improvisations with three frequent collaborators: JOHN SWANA, called “one of the most exciting trumpeters to arrive for a decade” by Mark Gardner, co-author of Blackwell’s Guide to Recorded Jazz, has played or recorded with a long list of international jazz artists including Freddie Hubbard, Christian McBride, Kenny Barron, Tito Puente, Stanley Turrentine, and Brad Mehldau.  John will be featured on the electric valve instrument (EVI).  Guitarist KEVIN HANSON is a former member of Huffamoose, current member of The Fractals, and in-demand studio musician who has worked with The Roots and Jill Scott.  Drummer ERIK JOHNSON is also a current member of the The Fractals and former member of Huffamoose.  He was a member of Ben Schachter’s Trio of Many and has worked with Gary Bartz, Larry McKenna, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Kurt Elling, Gerald Veasley, Schooly D., Tyrone Brown, and many others.

Lucky Old Souls @ Moonstone is a monthly event, showcasing some of Philadelphia’s most creative musicians in a laid-back, BYOB venue that combines the intimacy of a club with a concert hall’s respect for the music.
