Ian O’Beirne’s Jones: A “jones” is an urge or craving – not a bad way to understand the energy behind the music of alto saxophonist Ian O’Beirne. He and his quintet chums hail from Philly’s two main jazz academies – Temple and University of the Arts – and like many young jazzers, they bring a host of other influences to the table, from epic alt-rock to classical. There’s no album yet, but the promising live tracks on MySpace highlight wild guitar-driven sonics and some winning rhythmic motifs. The personnel can change a bit from gig to gig.
