It Can’t Happen Here

Poetry submission deadline is January 24th, 2021
Virtual reading is January 31st, 2021

January 6, 2021

Is this country amazing or what? On the same day that an African American minister and a person of Jewish heritage are elected to the Senate from the state of Georgia, giving the Democratic party control of both houses of congress and the presidency, the current President incites a crowd of his supporters to attack the congress. People waving Confederate flags, breaking into the building, leaving two pipe bombs and several people dead.

Imagine if the demonstrators had been Black or Immigrants?

Sinclair Lewis is reported to have said, “When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross”? (The Sinclair Lewis Society says, “This quote sounds like something Sinclair Lewis might have said or written, but we’ve never been able to find this exact quote. There is a similar quote in It Can’t Happen Here”.

We depend on poets to speak the truth.

What do you think, how do you feel about this?

Send me a poem.
